Myth: Treatment is only cosmetic.
Fact: While going through the orthodontic process can enhance the cosmetic look of the teeth and mouth, it does have other primary benefits of correcting alignment and occlusion.
Myth: Orthodontic treatment always takes too long and is inconvenient.
Fact: The orthodontic process is always advancing for more effective and less lengthy treatments. There are many options like clear aligners that offer convenience as well as less time for treatment for many patients.
Ideal alignment and occlusions are the optimal positioning of the teeth and jaw. Alignment refers to the straightening of the teeth while occlusions refers to how the upper and lower jaw come together when the mouth is closed. They are important for effective chewing, clear speech, long-term oral health, and the overall look of the teeth and jaw.
Correct alignment of the teeth and jaw is important because it can reduce the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and TMJ. Having misalignment or occlusion will increase the risk of these health issues as well as cause stress on the jaw potentially causing discomfort and pain.
Signs of misalignment or occlusion will be apparent crooked teeth, gaps, trouble biting or chewing, jaw pain frequently biting the inner sides of the cheek or tongue, and discomfort when opening or closing the mouth.
Treatment options will vary by patient needs and the severity of the misalignment or occlusion. The different types of treatments can include braces, clear aligners, occlusion adjustments- which would be reshaping the biting surfaces of the teeth, restoring crowns, or sometimes orthognathic surgery.
The duration of treatment varies for each patient but it can take anywhere between 6 months to 3 years. Occlusion adjustments or restorative work can have fewer visits over a shorter period of time.
There is no age limit for correcting alignment or occlusion. While these treatments are usually discussed in adolescence or childhood, adults can also have successful treatment, although treatment may take longer due to the maturity of the teeth and jaw.
Because of medical advancements, these treatments are much more comfortable than in the past. Usually after adjustments, there is some discomfort and pressure, but it is usually temporary and manageable.
Not addressing these issues can lead to problems like tooth decay, gum disease, jaw pain, headaches, and digestive issues from ineffective chewing.
Keeping up oral hygiene is important for a successful treatment. This will include brushing and flossing after every meal or at least twice a day. Depending on the treatment that you receive, there are special tools to help keep the appliance clean. Attending regular cleanings and checkups with the hygienist is also important to monitor your progress and your oral health.
This will depend on what type of insurance company, what type of plan you have, and what type of treatment you will be going through. Many plans cover portions of treatment, but it’s best to check with your insurance provider on specifics for treatment.
